First Trip to Italy
Your first trip to Italy should not feel like a race. The country is richer, slower and more layered than most itineraries allow. The goal is not to see everything. The goal is to leave already wanting to come back.
For a first trip, the safest structure is simple. One major city, one cultural base and one slower escape.
Rome gives you ancient history, the Vatican, restaurants, piazzas and the feeling of a real capital. Florence gives you art, Renaissance architecture, Tuscan day trips and a walkable rhythm. Venice gives you something that exists nowhere else. Add the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, Lake Como or Sicily only if the trip length allows it.
The biggest mistake Americans make is adding too many transfers. Italy looks small on a map, but moving between hotels, stations, airports, ferries and coastal roads can quietly consume your vacation.
A first trip, done properly.
- The classic
- Rome for four nights, Florence for three, Venice for two. Iconic, varied and connected by train.
- The coast
- Rome, then Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. History first, then countryside, then the sea.
- The north
- Milan and Lake Como. A shorter, more polished northern itinerary with easy access.
Leave already wanting to come back.
A first trip should open the door, not try to see everything behind it.
