Travel to Italy from the US
Italy is one of the most rewarding countries in the world for American travelers, but the best trips are rarely improvised. The difference between a good trip and a frustrating one usually comes down to timing, logistics and knowing what not to overbook.
For most Americans, the first question is not whether Italy is worth it. It is how to make the most of your time without turning the trip into a checklist.
Start with the season
Summer works beautifully for the coast, the islands and lake life, but Rome, Florence and Venice can feel crowded and hot. Spring and fall are often better for cities, countryside, food, wine and culture. Winter can be excellent for Milan, Rome, Florence, Venice, skiing in the Dolomites and lower season luxury.
Choose the rhythm
A first trip should usually combine two or three bases, not six. Rome, Florence and Venice remain classic for a reason. Travelers who already know Italy often prefer Tuscany, Lake Como, Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia, Piedmont or the Amalfi Coast.
Travel slower
Italy rewards slower travel. Stay longer in fewer places, use high speed trains between major cities, hire drivers where the geography gets complicated, and book only the experiences that matter to you. If you want to see the coast properly, a private yacht charter often beats changing hotels every two nights.
U.S. citizens can generally enter Italy for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. Longer stays require a visa and then a residence permit. Confirm current rules through official channels before you travel.

A quick orientation.
- Rome
- Ancient history, the Vatican, restaurants, piazzas and the feel of a real capital.
- Florence
- Renaissance art and architecture, Tuscan day trips and a walkable rhythm.
- Venice
- Something that exists nowhere else. Best early in the day, late in the evening and off the main routes.
- Amalfi Coast
- Cinematic and social. Plan around boats and transfers, not against them.
- Tuscany
- Wine, countryside, villas and long lunches. The dream version of Italy.
- Lake Como
- Polished, romantic and quietly dramatic. A short luxury escape from Milan.
